Renovation of Turku Cathedral

A comprehensive renovation is being carried out at Turku Cathedral during the 2020s. The Cathedral is closed due to the renovation from 9 February 2026 to 2 December 2028. The work includes renewing the facilities, improving accessibility, and updating the building’s technical systems. The renovation is scheduled to be completed by Advent 2028, at the beginning of the church year when the city of Turku celebrates its 800th anniversary.

The Cathedral has always been a living church. It is the national shrine of Finland and a home of living faith. At the same time, it is also one of the most important buildings in Finland in terms of cultural history. For many people in Turku—and indeed for many Finns—the relationship with Turku Cathedral is deeply personal. All of these aspects are taken into account when planning the renovation.

Five questions about the renovation of the Cathedral

The renovation raises questions among people. Here are five key questions on the topic.

Schedule – when does the renovation begin and when will it be completed?

The implementation of the renovation of the Cathedral began on 9 February 2026. The work is scheduled to be completed by Advent, on 3 December 2028, the eve of Turku’s 800th anniversary celebrations. The Cathedral is therefore closed from 9 February 2026 to 2 December 2028. The Turku Cathedral Museum closed on 30 September 2025 and will reopen with a renewed exhibition once the renovation of the Cathedral is complete. During the renovation, it is not possible to visit the Cathedral, and no events are held there.

The renovation of the Cathedral – what does it mean and why now?

The renovation of Turku Cathedral includes renewing the facilities, improving accessibility, and updating the building’s technical systems. The current systems date back to the renovation carried out in the 1970s, and their age is the primary reason for the renovation in the 2020s. As part of the renovation, spaces that have not previously been open to the public will also be made accessible. While the technical systems and usability will be improved, the spirit and historical appearance of the Cathedral will be preserved.

Parish activities during the renovation – what can be expected?

Parish activities will continue during the renovation of the Cathedral. More detailed information about the activities of Turku International Congregation can be found on this website. During the renovation, church ceremonies such as baptisms and weddings will be held in other churches. Parish members living in the Turku and Kaarina area can choose another church as the venue for these ceremonies free of charge. Bookings are made as usual through the parishes’ reservation service.

The renovated Cathedral – what will it mean for the future?

After the renovation, the Cathedral will serve visitors, tourists, and those seeking quiet reflection even better. Once completed, the Cathedral will also enable new kinds of activities and gatherings, fostering community life and supporting the parish life of the present and the future. The next major renovation will likely not take place until the 2070s at the earliest.

Progress of the renovation – where can it be followed?

The progress and background of the renovation can be followed here on the Cathedral website. The “Updates from the site” page is regularly updated with information about the work as it advances. If you wish, you can also subscribe to the contractor’s weekly bulletin on NCC Finland’s website. In addition, you can follow Turku Cathedral Parish on social media, where updates on the progress of the work are posted from time to time.
